A city in southern Quebec, Canada, a river port. It is located between Montreal and the Second City of Quebec, at the confluence of the north bank of the St. Lawrence River and the St. Marys River. It is named after the St. Marys River is divided into three outlets by islands.


The French first established a fur trading post in 1634. The city was established in 1857. The population is about 50,000 (1981), 98% speak French. There are abundant water resources. The papermaking industry is developed and it is a world-famous newsprint production center. Others include textiles, clothing, electrical equipment, shoemaking, etc. There is a dock for ships to berth and a barn with a loader. The iron bridge across the St. Lawrence River (3,070 meters long) was built in 1967.
