Memphis is a city in Tennessee, United States. According to 2006 population estimates, Memphis has a total population of 680,768 people. It is the largest city in Tennessee, the second largest city in the southeastern United States after Jacksonville, Florida, and the 17th largest city in the country. The Memphis metropolitan area is the second largest metropolitan area in Tennessee after the Nashville metropolitan area. It includes parts of neighboring Mississippi and Arkansas, with a total population of 1,260,581 people. Of the four largest cities in Tennessee, including Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville, Memphis is the most populous but also the youngest. Memphis is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, on the Lower Chickasaw Escarpment, at the mouth of the Wolf River. Its connecting airport, Memphis International Airport, is the second largest cargo airport in the world, second only to Hong Kong International Airport.
