A coastal city and important naval base in Rhode Island in the northeastern United States. At one time it was the capital of Rhode Island, along with Providence. A small island located in the southwest corner of Rhode Island, connected to the mainland by a bridge. The population is about 29,000. It was a seaport in colonial times and is now a summer retreat for naval personnel and tourists as well as a wholesale and retail point for goods. The industries are mainly printing, food processing, and electrical equipment. There are cultural facilities such as museums and libraries. There are many historical sites around the port.
