A city in southeastern Texas, on the west shore of Lake Sabine, USA. There are canals leading to the Gulf of Mexico. The population is 61,000, and the urban population is 375,000 (1980). It was built in 1895 as the terminus of the Gulf Coast Railroad; the Port Arthur Canal was completed in 1899. In 1901, oil fields were discovered in the north of the city. Industry is centered around oil refining and petrochemicals. It is an important export port for petroleum and petroleum products.
